Who we are

Apolitical is a global peer-to-peer platform connecting the people working in government to the ideas, experts and partners they need to solve the hardest challenges facing our societies. Our mission is to make government great for citizens everywhere. We have just launched our platform — featured in the Financial Times — and raised a second round of investment to develop the product and expand our global government and partner engagement.

We believe that addressing the great challenges and opportunities of our time – from migration and cybersecurity to violence and urbanisation – requires smart, creative policymaking. Our core product is a knowledge and network platform, designed to give public servants better access to the policies, experts and partners they need. It brings the aesthetic of consumer tech and media and the power of data analysis and machine learning to the often dry impenetrable domain of policy. Over time, we will be evolving and expanding the platform to support those working in and with government in a variety of ways – including making it easier for government to find and work with the world’s most innovative tech startups.

What we do

Our core platform product helps public servants find what they need to make better policy decisions. Policymakers and their partners can login to our private network and discover one another via interactive maps and private directories. Our topic feeds bring them the latest and most important policies and opinions from around the world, along with curated forums, exclusive events and live online conversations with leaders. Both the scale of this platform offering and the user base are expanding rapidly. The platform brings together public servants from all over the world – 60 countries just a month after launch – to a space where they can find the best policy ideas and the best people to help execute them, unlocking the potential to change the lives of millions of people globally.
We are prototyping a products and services marketplace for innovative startups to showcase themselves to government, we will soon be speccing out a native mobile application and moving towards integrating machine learning across the platform – supported by a partnership with two machine learning spinouts from Oxford University. Alongside our platform, Apolitical partners with key government and non-government innovators to curate and convene events and webinars on pressing issues, which in turn brings content and members to our platform.

The Role

This person will have enormous scope to drive the technical decisions that shape the platform, as well as helping to build the rest of the team, and thus the company at large. You will report to the Director of Product, whilst working closely with all members of the Apolitical team – from the content department to the community and growth staff. We have senior technology advisors from high profile companies who can provide mentoring and advice as you navigate new challenges and technologies. You will initially start in a small team of 2-3 developers, however we are expanding rapidly and you should enjoy the prospect of being part of a bigger team within the next year.

You ensure the highest quality code is delivered in line with product cycles, and keep flexibility, security and our unique and influential user base front-of-mind at all times. You are comfortable with agile methodology and thrive working in a team whilst still being comfortable in a distributed company. Challenges excite rather than discourage you, and you are a creative force on the team; proactively suggesting ideas on multiple aspects of the business and the platform. You have a genuine appetite for staying abreast of new technologies and bring this to the table as Apolitical continues to integrate advanced tools such as machine learning into the platform.

Technical Skills and Experience

Our platform leverages social network functions such as messaging and posting, followable newsfeeds of stylised content, advanced search and filter, interactive maps and is moving towards online marketplaces and machine learning powered recommendations. We will increasingly be leveraging advanced data technologies and techniques, such as through our machine learning partnerships. Experience working with such tools would be an advantage.

We are only looking for exceptional, serious full stack developers who are committed to writing strong, sustainable, clean code. Our team will obsess over millisecond improvements, and be constantly thinking about the user experience of our features.

Skills and experience should include:

  • Experience with both backend and frontend development
  • Minimum 2 to 3 years’ experience
  • Comfort adapting from an existing WordPress codebase
  • Required languages [as a minimum]
    • PHP
      And one or more of the following:
    • Nodejs
    • Python
    • Go
    • Ruby on Rails
  • Understanding of end to end processes that underpin delivery of a web app, from UX research to Quality Assurance
  • Knowledge of RDBMS database concepts and SQL
  • Experience in agile development
  • Deeply committed to security, the protection of our users and the preservation of their trust in Apolitical
  • Bachelor’s degree (preferred but not essential)
