Apolitical wants to become the best source of insights, inspiration and information in the world for those in government. We are building on our unique dataset to become the world’s most comprehensive database of government problems, projects, policies and people. We are seeking an intern to support our ongoing work on a suite of tools that help make government more effective.
We are offering a 12 week paid internship with our Data Science team during summer 2020. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic this will be conducted entirely remotely and will be paid at London Living Wage.
The internship would be particularly suited to anyone seeking an entry point into Data Science e.g. those just graduated from university with a degree in a technical subject, recent graduates of a Data Science ‘boot camp’ programme, or anyone simply looking to make a change from an adjacent technical role (e.g. data analysis, software development).
Duties will include responding to requests for data analysis from other teams within the wider company as well as collaborating on a major Data Science project: the creation of a ‘knowledge graph’ for policy.
There is no ‘identikit’ Data Scientist – we welcome applications from a variety of backgrounds and we expect that the successful candidate will acquire many important new skills over the course of their internship. Skills that would strengthen an application include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Experience writing python code is the most important skill. Candidates should mention particular libraries they have used; we are particularly interested in candidates familiar with any of the following libraries: numpy, pandas, matplotlib, flask, sqlalchemy, spacy, scikit-learn, and pytest.
- Experience with SQL queries is highly desirable and general experience with databases/database-management would be well-regarded.
- Experience with graph databases would be especially useful for some of our current projects.
- Experience with web-scraping would be looked on favourably.
Please submit a CV and short (less than one page) covering letter with the subject line ‘Data Science Internship – Application’ to Dr Padraig Alton at: firstname.lastname@example.org – please use the letter to outline your Data Science interests/ambitions as well as why you’d be interested in working with Apolitical specifically. This will help us adapt the internship to ensure it is as mutually beneficial as possible.
Applications received by 9am on Monday 1st June 2020 will receive full consideration.
